Studio Desk Fabrication

on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 05:34

This semester, I led the redesign of the New Media and IDS undergraduate studio space in the Visual Arts Building. One of the major isssues affecting students was the lack of available workstations. Drawing from my experience with a previous furniture design project, I designed an 8 ft wide work desk that can be created entirely out of plywood on the CNC router. The goal is to create 12 of these desks to add to the existing work areas in the studio, increasing capacity to 40 work stations. When the desks aren't in use, they can be dismantled without any tools and flat packed into a storage closet. The first version of the design wasn't very sturdy after it was assembled, so I'm redesigning certain parts to increase rigidity. However, I've posted some pictures of the initial desk fabrication and design. The redesign will happen next week.
